The Balsam Fir is considered the "traditional, old-fashioned, fragrant" Christmas tree. While its distinctive 1/2 - 1 1/2 inch dark green needles are soft to the touch, it has firm branches which support almost any type of decoration. This variety has very good needle retention.
The Fraser Fir is fast becoming one of the most desired trees. Its one inch needles are dark green on the top and a lovely silver on the underneath side. While its fragrance is somewhat less than the Balsam, the Fraser's strong and distinctive branches make it easy to decorate. This variety has excellent needle retention.
The Spruce is easily identified because of its very short, somewhat prickly and stiff needles with very strong branches. Some varieties have a unique fragrance; the range of color is light to dark green while the Colorado Spruce has a lovely bluish look. If kept well watered, the needle retention is good.
The White Pine has soft, deep green, very long needles. While it has little fragrance, its over all delicate, extremely full look make it a favorite for anyone wanting to decorate with light weight ornaments. It is usually moderately priced and has excellent needle retention.
The Norway Pine has firm, deep green, very long needles. It has a uniquely western mountain fragrance with strong branches. It is usually moderately priced and has excellent needle retention.
